He's in my top 3, but that could change as my mood does. I've been to a ton of alphabet soup boxing conventions, and this question comes up all the time. A lot of people you run into at these things have Holmes as their #1 all time heavy, and it's not that ludicrous of an opinion.

I agree with the top three. But there is a large gap between #2 and the rest of the heavyweight division.

I ranked him 6th last time I did a top 10 hw list. Probably most underrated hw of all times.

Eh Liston and Dempsey over guys like Lewis, Johnson, Charles, Foreman, Holyfield etc? Based on what exactly?

Based on I'm an old mother ****er lol. But I agree, those spots could easily be swapped out and I wouldn't put up much of a fight.

Admittedly, I've only watched the Spinks-Holmes fights once each. As I recall, the first fight I scored for Spinks in a razor-thin decision. The second I thought Larry won. I'll have to rewatch those fights to see. He's certainly top 10. I'd put the following in front of him:

            1)Ali
            2)Louis
            3)Lewis
4)Foreman (Due to his incredible 80's comeback)
            and 5)Holmes

I think Lennox Lewis also edges him out, due to the fact that he beat much stiffer competition. Granted, he does have two KO losses against him, but he just beat that much better opposition. Just my $0.02.

Got around to watching the first Holmes/Spinks fight, and I must say: Anyone who thinks Holmes was robbed is blind. Spinks clearly won that fight. And in what akward fashion! He was slipping in and out of Holmes' reach, and landing punches from very strange angles, often off balance. What a masterful performance. He made Holmes look ordinary.

Larry was looking for one big shot all night, and it didn't come. Props to Spinks for that performance. If only he had fought that way against Tyson!

It was the second one that was the robbery. The first fight could have gone either way imo.

                      Wouldn't you be?

Arguably the best skilled heavyweight of all times, but never got the attention or accolades he deserved. Not until he was almost done anyway.
