  • Comments Thread For: Canelo Does Not Regret Previously Passing on Mayweather

Two years ago, WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) was offered the opportunity to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs). He wanted the fight, but his handlers felt he needed more experience. Now the fight is set for September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo now feels ready after beating seasoned opponents like Shane Mosley, Austin Trout and others.

Ive criticized Floyd in the past with his opponent selection and I am glad he has proved me wrong by not only taking this fight with the Cinnabomber but also fighting 2x this year.

I dont really see the 152 being that much a problem considering Canelo is young,

Even though im leaning toward 70- 30 in favor for Mayweather I think Canelo can pull it off if he applies all the tools that previous fighters used against Floyd to catch him..

    1. Jab Jab and Jab
    2. Effective Aggression
    3. Combos no wasted punches
    4. Dont start late or let rounds slip away..

If Canelo can continuously work off a jab with effective combos, he has a chance, but still im leaning towards Floyd due to experience and that fact that hes THAT GOOD.

Good post. I agree and also for Canelo to go to the body.

I dont think the weight should make much of a difference.

To me that jab is absolutely the key. Canelo will need to be extremely patient and work with his jab, maybe even moving away from Floyd early. Aside from that gameplan, in any other way he has his punchers chance, Floyd is definitely the favorite but this fight is still intriguing.

I find it interesting that Floyd was very eager to fight him when he was like 19 years old but now he asked for a catchweight and almost seemed forced by public demand and Showtime pressure to take the fight at this point in time.

People say that he is inexperienced now but just how inexperienced would he have been over two years ago?

Canelo has enough weapons, and smarts to make this interesting. If he works on his stamina and inside game, he could end up being too much or Floyd.
