  • Has Canelo's Learning Process and Growth Been Hampered

Canelo obviously is one of the biggest attention getters in the sport..
I think his career has been handled perfectly up and till he fought mosely..

My feeling is his learning experience has been hampered the last 2 years because GBP has wanted to use him as a PPV attraction..

Being in his early 20's GBP did the right thing by having him fight guys like Rhodes, Hatton, Gomez, Cintron, and Mosely.. Canelo was learning on the job, staying active, and building his brand awareness...
But then after the Mosely fight they tried to suddenly make him a ppv star and Canelo wasnt as active, only fighting twice since then...

I think GBP really dropped the ball on this.. He should have done what young oscar and shane, and nonitio did in 2012 and stay very active... He had a plethora of options..
    Shane in May 2012
Ortiz in July 2012 after berto failed his drug test
    Lopez after Paul williams accident
K-9 in december 2012 because he had a belt
Ishe Smith or Spinks in Feb of 2013
Angulo fight in april or may 2013
    Cotto late 2013

You can even subsitute Mayorga, or kirkland somewhere in there
I think Canelo would have won all those fights, built his brand, made $$$, and set himself up for floyd and serg fights in 2014 which would have been like Oscar 1995-1998 setting him up for the big fights of ike, tito, oba, mosely, vargas

And that's exactly why he fought Mosley and Lopez. Gomez and Cintron were also throwaway opponents as well, should've fought Molina instead (who had just beaten Cintron). After Molina, he could've fought K9 to finish 2011 and then begin 2012 by fighting the Angulo/Kirkland winner. Instead of fighting Trout in 2013, he could've fought him coming off his win over Rodriguez. Cotto/Canelo could've closed out 2012 with a ****. GBP took the path of least resistance and because of it, he's fighting Mayweather. That's all that matters for GBP atm, setting up fighters for Floyd's consumption.

Yes, i agree but in the long run that will hurt GBP because canelo is not ready for the big PPVS.
His popularity is greater than his skills at this point....
Remeber Fernando Vargas was a monster but learning against light punching winky and small quartey, but then threw him in with Tito and got destroyed and never recovered from that beating...

He has reached the peak of his hype. Now is the time to fight Mayweather, Its the perfect timing, his investors know what theyre doing and are cashing out on him. Its all downhill after he loses to Mayweather.

152 catch weight to make people think Canelo is dangerous and to drain the robotic style fighter just for good measure.

              .

Yeah i agree that he is being cashed out but i think its the wrong move...

Staying active and cashing out in 2014 or even 2015 would have been better imo

Had he not been as popular/marketable, GBP would've probably matched him with better competition and taken more risks.

I used to think that Floyd would ruin Canelo (like Trinidad ruined Vargas), but not anymore. At worse, class will be in session for Canelo and he'll get the schooling of a lifetime. If he somehow gets stopped or gets his ass whupped, that would be a COMPLETE embarrassment.

I agree, total embarrassment if canelo gets stopped.. Hell even Chavez Jr lasted with serg..

Floyd is not a big puncher Like tito was so canelo may be safe from a brutal ko..
