Andre Ward vs. Chad Dawson did 1.3M viewers on HBO.

Froch vs. Kessler was shown twice and only had 1.07M viewers on HBO.

I think Froch needs to try some humble pie.

all cable TV ratings are counted as live and same day replays. All of them, from Dawson vs Ward to Game of Thrones and Dexter. This is standard for a HBO boxing match and slightly higher for an international fight. HBO buys these international fights for dirt cheap.

Articles which report TV ratings usually don't mention the live plus same day replay part for most fights. E.G they'll usually just tell us that Broner pulled 1.5 million viewers and we should all love Broner. It reeks of an obvious bias that they would slot it in there now as if to demote what was a successful event.

a fight like that deserves more viewings

Few fights will get more Broner, Khan, Canelo and Chavez Jr are considered the biggest draws who fought on HBO and their ratings were in the 1.6-2 million range. So long as boxing remains on HBO and showtime in those horrible timeslots it will never get more viewers. Boxing is primarily shown in a timeslot called the Saturday/Friday night dead slot. It's basically a time **** all people stay in to watch TV. Back in the old days it was the best timeslot but as times changed less people started tuning in on those days. Boxing never learned to pull itself out of that slot. Perhaps because most boxing promoters live in a different era and most of them can't even use the internet let alone figure out how modern Tv ratings work.

It's doubtful that you paid the same amount for those events as how much Alvarez/Mayweather tickets will go for. It's kind of off topic but we all understand the sport in regards to why Vegas gets massive fights. Casinos can pony up that huge amount of money to host the event and then lure in the big wigs to come enjoy a weekend on the town. They couldn't careless how many butts actually sit and watch the event.

I get what you're saying though. Boxing is a global sport, that's what makes it great. The big events that actually have real boxing fans in the crowd, not some rich company dudes is only a positive.

You make a valid point about the Casinos, but I'll bet - although I can't be bothered to fact check it - that both gate and ppv prices were alot higher for Froch-Kessler II then Alvarez/Mayweather. The PPV price in Denmark, which is the only one I know by heart was $ 86,65.

It's so funny to watch the European hyper-nationalism as it plays along. Hey guys - nobody is judging whether or not it was a success for the fighters, Dutch, English, or anyone else over there. This article and this thread is speaking about whether or not it was a success for HBO only. And for HBO, in America, it was a failure relative to Ward's last fight which drew significantly more viewers in half as many airings.

Wards last fight was against a bigger name opponent, it actually did badly when you consider Dawson-Bhop did over 1.6m

super bowl did 100 million viewers so that means everything else on TV that doesn't do those same numbers is a flop - boxing logic.

Ouch, in England was about $35 for the PPV.

Ringside seats were just over $1k and the cheapest ones were around the $130 mark (there was a very very limited $100 lot)
