Cotto may need a tune up to get rid of ring rust but he does not need a win to land the Canelo fight. He can have that fight just for being Cotto. The only thing that makes me think Canelo won't be fighting Cotto is that Canelo wants to fight on the 14 of September somewhere out west. Canelo may not take a fight on September 28th in New York.
