A world title contender will look to stay unbeaten and solidify a position towards a world title fight on Friday night in the 10 round main event bout at the Maywood Activity Center in Maywood, CA..
Lightweight Jose Miguel Cotto will face Ubaldo Hernandez to headline a six-bout "Champions of Tomorrow" card presented by KO Productions in association with Top Rank.
The bout, along with Giovanni Segura facing Jose Luis Perez in the eight co-feature, will be televised on Telefutura's "Solo Boxeo de Miller."
Cotto, (26-0, 18 KO's) from Caguas, Puerto Rico, is coming off the longest layoff in his career. He has not fought in 10 ½ months, when he knocked out Genaro Trazcanos in the 7th round to win vacant WBO Intercontinental Super Featherweight title.
He was scheduled to face five-time former world featherweight champion Manuel Medina in an IBF jr lightweight eliminator last August, however the bout was scratched after Cotto was unable to make the 130lb limit.
Better known as the older brother of Miguel Cotto, Jose has blazed his own trail in reaching this point in his career. He may be almost as explosive as his brother, but he is also very consistent and works the body hard to slowly dissect his opponent.
Perhaps his most difficult bout in his career was when he won a 10 round split decision bout over former world title challenger Bobby Boy Velardez in an August 2000 bout.
He will take on Hernandez, (20-16-2, 10 KO's) from Fort Myers, FL by way of Mexico City, DF, Mexico, is coming off his biggest win of his career. He won a 10 round majority decision over Ivan Hernandez in November. The bout snapped an six bout losing streak.
Hernandez had some bad luck during that stretch. He lost two bout back to back by split decision, first to Francisco Lorenzo and then to Rolando Reyes. Reyes is scheduled to fight Jose Luis Castillo on February 4th.
Despite setbacks, Hernandez has pulled out minor upsets other than the victory over Ivan Hernandez bout.
Hernandez shockingly knocked out Ebo Elder in the first round of a title bout in November of 2001. Three months later, he won a majority decision bout over talented Joaquin Gallardo.
Ironically, Hernandez did face Miguel Cotto in 2002, succumbing in the seventh round by knockout.
