Comments Thread For: Jamie McDonnell: I Felt I Could Have Stopped Ceja Late

Jamie McDonnell dismissed Julio Ceja's fearsome reputation to claim the vacant IBF bantamweight title with a controversial majority decision win at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster. McDonnell, who lost two successive fights five years ago and looked to be going nowhere, had worked his way up the rankings to earn the shot and took it with both hands.

However, he seemed to have lost his chance against Ceja, whose powerful work looked to have done enough to win the belt on away turf only for contentious scores of 114-114, 115-113 and a frankly ludicrous 118-110 to hand it to McDonnell.

This was a war. Way better than Floyd vs Guerrero because floyd hugs and runs 80% of the fight.

I had a good chuckle when I saw Primetime trying to push this as a PPV

Nothing against the guy, but the day Jamie McDonnell is a PPV fighter is the day fat boy Arreola rules the HW division with an iron fist. Regarding the fight, thought he got the benefit of some dubious scorecards.

This brings up a pet peeve of mine, namely ring size. The hometown advantage usually, I don't know about this fight, but usually includes ring size. A big ring if the local fighter is a boxer, or a small ring if he's a puncher. Ring size has been hard to regulate due to fighter size. Heavyweights look cramped in a small ring and flyweights get lost in a big one. Any show with a mixed card has this problem, but championship fights should be better regulated. To illustrate the point, had this fight been in Mexico, Ceja, being the puncher, would probably have got Jaime in a 16 foot ring, (same for Burns vs Gonzalez in Puerto Rico) not counting the apron, rope to rope. Does anybody know how big the ring was in Scotland?

so did anyone watch this fight?

Crazy having a Brit fighting for a world title not on television.

It's nice to have another world champ though.
