    One More Camacho Discussion

Well, Machotime asked me if I thought that Camacho, with proper training, could have defeated a prime Chávez or a prime Ray Leonard. This is what I replied.

I don't know Macho personally, but I know about his ring abilities, and I think that he might be the most naturally gifted PR boxer ever. Trinidad and Gómez had more power, and Benítez perhaps had a better defense, but Macho was well rounded. I was thinking about the Chávez fight. I mean, Macho won about 2 rounds, but he showed glimpses of what could have happened had he prepared better. Considering the fact that Chávez had trouble with fast boxers, I think that Camacho could have defeated him. Besides, Macho beat Ramírez and Mancini, who were aggressive boxers like Julio. About a prime Ray, I don't know. The thing is that Ray was a 147 and a prime Camacho was 135, so the size is too much.

Any unbiased thoughts? STFU if all you want to argue is related to nationality. Honest opinions are appreciated.

Nah, I think he's alright. Not that I care about boxers looks when I choose my favorites. I am not a "***** eye for the world champ boxer" type.

Macho was one of the most talented fighters to ever step into the ring. His natural ability to box was incredible, his speed was unmatchable, his ring intelligence was unbreakable. He was a boxing wizard who threw beautiful combos and left before you could blink or say ouch. But one thing that he lacked was work ethic. Not to make excuses but, for the Chavez fight, Macho was maintaining a lifestyle that no boxer should maintain. Drinking, socially smoking, and not training properly or enough. But as always he pulled through to cut the weight and fight the fight. By the 4th round, Macho's best assets (footwork and speed) were diminished. Although Chavez's body work played a role in this, Macho's lack of training was the big contributor to this. I think that Macho was untouchable at 135 and 140 and with the proper conditioning there was not a fighter at that time that could beat him either at 135 or 140.

To be fair enough, you gotta consider that Meldrick Taylor and Pernell Whitaker were up there in skills, with Pernell having a better defense than Macho.

Meldrick taylor was very fast but had many openings, that would give Camacho an edge bc Macho's footwork was so great. Camacho would outbox Meldrick. But i think you have a point with pernell.
