Cotto's Future plans: Move back to Welter???

Miguel Cotto is a future hall-of-famer, and one of the best of his era. Maybe not an all-time great, but certainly one of the top fighters of the past decade.
Any boxing fan knows Cotto's career is coming to a close. He has been in so many entertaining brawls with the likes of Margarito, Torres, Corley, Floyd, Manny, Mayorga, Trout, Judah, Mosley, Maussa and Clottey.
For the last few years, ever since Cotto was stopped by Manny, he has been campaigning at 154. Rumor has it that he is the front runner for a Canelo fight later this year. Yes, that would be a huge PPV event and a nice payday for Cotto, but realistically he has little to no chance against a bigger, younger power-puncher such as Canelo.
Instead of the Canelo fight, i suggest Cotto should move to welter. The match-ups there are huge for him, and he won't be the smaller guy in every fight.
    Can you imagine: Cotto-Maidana
    Cotto-Ortiz
    Cotto- Guerroro
    Cotto-Thurman
    Cotto-Berto
    Cotto-khan
Cotto- Alexander (Yes, I think Cotto could be one of the few fighters to put Alexander in an exciting fight)

I would favor Cotto over all of those fighters and if he could beat two of them that would lead him to huge fights like a possible Floyd or Manny rematch, or even better: Cotto-Broner
    Cotto-Bradley
    Cotto-Marquez

All these fights mentioned would be huge money fights and Cotto would not have to be a sacrificial lamb like he would in a Canelo fight.

What do you guys think of my plan of Cotto going to welter??

Everyone on this site is in agreement that he should move down to 147 but the question is, is he willing and able?

I hope he does. I would love to see him fight maidana, berto, Broner, Ortiz, and Bradley.

I honestly see him beating alot of those guys. I would only favor manny or floyd over him at this point.

And the money would be there if he fought Broner for a belt, or Bradley/Marquez winner

I doubt he moves back down to 147, it's much more likely he fights Canelo late this year. He would have to work hard to move back down to welterweight and I haven't heard any rumors about him moving down in weight.

I agree that he will probably cash himself out in a canelo fight, but I think the only reason he moved to 154 was because Manny creamed him at welter. (I know it was cw of 145) but at the time there was easy fights at 154 like foreman for a belt, mayorga etc.
Now that the divisions have changed and canelo and trout are dominant at 154 i think miguel could make 147. No catchweight stuff at 145.

Look at what mosley did. He went up and had success at 154, got dragged by natural 154er in Winky. Moved back down and got the cotto fight and margarito fight and from there landed a floyd, manny and candelo fight.
Cotto would be wise to follow shane's blueprint.
He gets wins over maidana and ortiz, alexander etc it sets up huge fights with broner and possible rematches with floyd and manny plus canelo is still going to be around. No sense in cashing yourself out early if you can still win big money fights at welter

I agree he should go back to his true natural weight of 147. I never thought he belonged at 154. To make 147 Cotto has to train harder and eat less. I think at 147 he would hit just as hard and be a bit faster with better stamina. He won't go to 147 so that's his choice. I think he would beat the 147 pounders on your list with the possible exceptions of Maidana and Thurman. I think those are even fights.

He should drop down if he can, for me his situations reminds me of Zab Judah. They don't have the skillset required to deal with fighters who will be physically bigger than them in the ring.

                Cotto-Guerrero

                Cotto-Maidana

                Cotto-Khan

                All good comeback fights.

Cotto-Garcia is THE fight at 147 if Danny ever decides to grow some balls and move up.

Cotto wants that big payday he will get when he fights Canelo in September. I can understand that. It might be his retirement fight.
