Out of interest if the the number was under a million, say between 850,000 and 1,000,000 at $70 a pop would that actually cause Showtime to lose money?

It wasnt that long ago that Mayweather Hatton got 900,000 odd buys and it was seen as a great number...

Do they commit more money to advertising since those days?

The ultimate problem is Showtime committed so much guaranteed money to Floyd that they need the ppvs to break at least a million to break even.

Don't underestimate this if PPV did as bad as I've heard: Pacquiao's loss hurt it. Make no mistake. Without specter of May-Pac less interest
I agree with Fat Dan here Pac's loss hurt Floyds ppv drawing power and combine it with no Canelo on the under card.

Probably 3 factors at work here..

            1) Spent a lot more on advertising because Guerrero's name doesnt sell itself
            2) Mayweather's guaranteed purse and share of PPV is much higher now
            3) Hatton-Mayweather also sold over 1 million PPV's in the UK

How many days does it normally take before numbers start floating around?

If this fight loses money it will have some serious implications.

First off any money they lose is going to come out of their boxing budget, which means less fights on Showtime period.

Second, if this fight loses money than so would every other potential matchup outside of Canelo and Pac. Considering his contract is a 3-4 year deal then Showtime knows their budget is ****ed for a long time to come.

                    Which means...

They will try to exert as much pressure as possible to get Mayweather in the ring with Canelo or Pac.

                    Which means...

Mayweather will probably just retire again after 1 or 2 more mismatches.

Yes, they are public companies... I won't even bother explaining what that means because it still baffles me everytime there's a ppv and people talk about companies cooking ppv numbers....

People need to remember this happen when he fought Ortiz and everyone bought into it because reporters like Steve Kim that are bankrolled by top rank started spreading rumors..
