Comments Thread For: Martinez Had Lingering Knee Issues, DiBella Confirms

Sergio Martinez was indeed still hobbled by a past knee injury going into his April 27 defense of his middleweight championship against Martin Murray, according to Martinez’s promoter, Lou DiBella, who confirmed the lingering issues in an interview with Dan Rafael of ESPN.com.

While Martinez won Saturday by unanimous decision, he was given a tough fight by Murray and often looked less mobile than he usually appears in the ring. Martinez suffered torn ligaments in his right knee during his win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last September and had surgery in November, just five and a half months before the Murray fight.

For somebody who had knee surgery and in their 40's, he was moving around a lot.
    Still not as agile though.

    Sergio's body is breaking down.
IMO, he needs to hurry and take the big money fights before they're gone

no matter if you like Sergio or not, the guys tough as nails. He has a lot of injuries... maybe because he's so active all the time with the biking and such that he does, but heart? The guy's got it all over a lot of fighters in that area.

Not to his 40's yet... almost though.

You could definitely tell he was not in near the shape he was against Chavez Jr.

I wholeheartedly believe his knee was still an issue and that he broke his hand again.

What I worry about is that he isn't going to ever be in that initial shape again.

I hate to say it but I think the Sergio we have seen previously is gone for good. Hopefully I'm wrong, but on Saturday night he looked like he was on the decline.

Definitely seems like it. He wasn't moving with as much agility as we've seen previously. I agree that he's also just very close to the end of his career. His reflexes didn't seem to be up to par either.

Sergio's chin and body seem fine, he started late in the game so he hasn't taken punishment most boxers take...BUT...dude was a cyclist for a long time and moves non stop in fights too, his knees are the problem areas for him and its obvious his legs aren't what they used to be. I think he was out of shape for this fight and you could tell by his body and style alone, but the reason is probably like Dibella is saying, the knee was too damaged for him to the training he needed to do to get in proper shape. He's gotta take a break and let it all heal, its a good thing he broke his hand, he needs time to rest his body, like Floyd does.
