Comments Thread For: Klitschko-Povetkin Was Close To Holyfield-Douglas Record

While many believed Tuesday's shocking heavyweight bid was a record-breaker, it still only comes in second to the main title holder. As first reported on BoxingScene.com, Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov set down a monster bid of $23,200,000 million dollars to overwhelm the competition at the WBA's mandatory heavyweight purse bid, securing the rights to the championship fight between Wladimir Klitschko (59-3, 50KOs) and Alexander Povetkin (25-0, 17KOs). K2 Promotions put in a bid of $7.1 million dollars and Sauerland Event bid 6.01 million. [Click Here To Read More]

Its amazing the purse bid was as high as it is considering everyone knows this is going to be a one sided beatdown.

It's remarkable that over 20 years ago, a boxing purse could be so high @ $32 million. After adjusting for inflation that purse would be roughly $57 million in today's dollars (source:http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/). I guess it goes to show how much more popular boxing was back then.

Another notable observation is that Holyfield make $8 million for the Douglas fight in 1990 and, now, over twenty years later - he's ****in broke..

          I'm unconvinced!

Povetkin is going to pull out with an injury or make some type of demands that Klitschko won't agree with.

The guy KNOWS he is going to lose to Klitschko.

I hope he proves me wrong.

Hopefully Douglas was smart with his money...

If a fight's never going to happen, you can lay down however much money you like. I could confidently have offered $50m because I'd know I'd never actually have to pay a penny.
