What about 'Thou shalt not kill', or is it 'Thou shalt not kill unless in self-defense'?

"Thou shalt not kill" would be better translated as "Thou shalt not murder". Self defense, warfare and capital punishment are the exceptions. Does it make sense that God would deem that we should to allow a stranger to walk into our home, kill and **** our family and not kill that person if need be? If you take that stance, if a wild animal were attacking your child, you shouldn't kill it either? Correct?
