One on One with Henry "El Nitro" Bruseles

Posted by Herminio Nieves on 01-12-2005 | 7:39 pm

"I expect to win but you never know. I know that if I give a great demonstration big fights will come."
TainoBox had the opportunity to speak with Henry ‘El Nitro’ Bruseles who on January 22 will face Floyd Mayweather in what should be the defining fight of his career. This is what Bruseles had to say about this mega fight.

The Jr. Welterweight clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr.(32-0, 21 KOs) and Henry Bruseles (20-2, 13KOs) will be fought at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, FL and be delivered live to homes across the world via HBO World Championship Boxing on January 22, 2005 at 10:00PM ET/7:00PM PT.

Herminio Nieves: How would you compare this training camp versus previous ones?

Henry ‘Nitro’ Bruseles: We have worked mainly on our conditioning. We’ll attack the body from the first round because I believe that the key to victory is the offense.

    Q. How much are you weighing right now?

Bruseles: I feel great. Right now I’m at 143 lbs and we have sparred for more than 110 rounds.

    Q. How has Miguel Cotto help you for this fight?

Bruseles: In our sparring sessions he has imitated the style of Mayweather. He is throwing punches and then moving. That’s what I expect form him.

    Q. Who else has helped you?

Bruseles: Daniel ‘Azuquita’ Jiménez and Ramón Cruz have helped me a lot. ‘Azuquita’ is very fast, so he has been very important.

    Q. What are the advantages that you have over Mayweather?

Bruseles: I am a better puncher but he is faster. However, my biggest advantage will be conditioning. He gets tired, especially in the later rounds. At the beginning the fight could be somewhat difficult but as the rounds go by I should be able to impose my style.

    Q. At one moment you were considered the best prospect in Puerto Rico, along with Miguel Cotto. However, you suffered 2 unexpected losses. What have you learned from them?

Bruseles: That’s a thing of the past. Both of those losses were controversial and I always felt that I won. Now I am only thinking about the future. I have more experience and I learned that I can’t go to the ring overconfident.

    Q. Do you have a prediction for this bout?

Bruseles: I am going to fight round by round and will see what happen.

    Q. This fight will be shown live by HBO so a good showing would do wonders for your career. Obviouslly you expect to win but even in defeat you could come away victorious. Do you agree?

Bruseles: I expect to win but you never know. I know that if I give a great demonstration big fights will come.

    Q. What are the plans if you beat Mayweather?

Bruseles: I would look for Arturo Gatti.

Herminio Nieves: Thanks a lot for your time Henry and we wish you the best.

Bruseles: No problem. Thanks a lot.

I give Bruseles a better chance of beating Mayweather than most. I don't think he will win but, if he does, it won't be a surprise.

this guy doesn't sound confident that he'll win, i think that going into a fight with idea that you're gonna lose is a bad start right away.
