How weird is it for young boxing fans ?

How weird is it for young boxing fans to think that in the 90's guys like Rid**** Bowe went on world tours, secured a 100 Million Dollar contract (166 Million inflation) and is a tier 1 super star in the sports world. Guys like Holyfield made appearances on Fresh Prince of Bel Air and was a national icon. It wasn't just Mike Tyson.. Even Tony Tucker was a big name.. The heavyweights were actually stars on par with the NBA Athletes of today.

I mean how weird is it to think that the heavyweights were house hold names and not just 1-2 but multiple heavys.

In this current environment it's almost a surreal feeling thinking that those guys once stood tall among the stars of other sports and that the heavyweight division was a true flagship.

There is just something about a heavyweight fight between two elite heavyweights. The electricity in the air is indescribable. Nothing.. not even big fights like Trout-Canelo or Mayweather/Pacquaio fights could match it. It's just a feeling of suspense knowing that these two giants are literally the two baddest men on the planet. Bar None. It don't matter if you were Jordan or Emmit Smith.. the heavyweights would have taken you down.

When Bowe stood across from Evander.. that was the two baddest boys in sports. Period. Not just in boxing. But in ALL of sports. (with all due respect to Lennox of course) You just don't get that feeling anymore.

The analysts, the writers, the historians were right. Boxing will never die.. But in order for boxing to truly thrive.. you need a heavyweight superstar.

And that's why we have Deontay Wilder.

I kind of remember it, Pacquiao can still get on Kimmel but this is what the promoters decided they wanted.

Yep, got into boxing during the time of no great American heavyweights. Sucks.

I remember EVERYONE watching Tyson fights. It didn't matter if you liked boxing, you watched him fight. Hell, even Oscar and Trinidad. I had three really close friends who were Puerto Rican in high school, and when Trinidad fought, they had entire family gatherings, and those were the only fights they watched.

I don't know anyone that watches boxing now. Not a single person.

what used to be British level of boxing (watching Danny Williams et al lumber around back in the day) is the same level as today (watching Arreola and Klitscho club about). Its no wonder no one is interested, when fatboys and shirkers have replaced brave tuned athletes.

The heavyweight division just has that appeal of drawing in people who aren't necessarily clued up about the boxing world. If you haven't seen boxing before, or know little about it, you know what Heavyweight means, and it usually translates like the strongest fighters in the world.

Today it's the Welterweight division because of Floyd and Manny, but it'll never draw interest like the Heavyweights would in a glamour period.

How weird is it for people who only watched heavyweight boxing in the 90s to see two welterweights become the highest paid athletes on the planet?
