Comments Thread For: Figueroa Knew Cotto Would Fall From Body Damage

Omar Figueroa graduated from rising prospect to budding contender after an explosive first round knockout of Abner Cotto in a matchup of unbeaten lightweights Saturday evening in San Antonio, Texas.

The win marked the second straight opening round stoppage for Figueroa – both of which have come in San Antonio. The Weslaco native appeared in town last month, needing just 47 seconds to blow past Henry Aurud.

More time was necessary to get past Cotto, though not by a lot. Figueroa scored two knockdowns, one midway through the round and one to end the fight at 2:57 of the opening round. He has now fought twice in a row in San Antonio, though not giving the local fans much time to check him out.

Figueroa's a solid prospect... He's strong and relentless (reminds me of a cruder, but more powerful Margarito).

There are plenty of great matchups at 135 and 140 (the kid is young and has a big frame for 135, the move is an eventuality). He has a great style, but he's going to look terrible against certain styles that happen to be prominently atop 135 (Vazquez and Abril; 2 fighters that don't care if they have to hold hundreds of times during a fight to neutralize his strengths). Granted, they can make anyone look terrible, but especially fighters that rely on strength, volume, and pressure to breakdown their opponents (off topic: it's going to take someone with an fast boxer-puncher along the styles of Gamboa or Linares to take out Vazquez and Abril).

The intelligent decision would be going after (what is going to be) Broner's vacant WBC title or even Burns (the kid would have a good shot at the upset).

Figueroa has a draw on his record. I saw the fight -- he didn't look quite well under the pressure. But he has potential.
