Now that the dust has settled: Canelo vs Trout

After carefully watching the fight I scored it 115-112 (7-5) in favor of Canelo. I know there’s a lot of controversy among some of the fans that going by the numbers might perceived Trout as the victor by simply “outworking” Alvares. But, in my opinion this fight is a clear example of how numbers can be deceiving. You see, this is a case in which Alvares although landing fewer shots was the more effective aggressive fighter. He might not throw as many punches as Trout did but he clearly was making a more meaningful impact with his output.

Another thing that tip the balance towards Canelo for me was the fact that Trout constantly made the mistake of having a little too much separation between his legs whenever he let his hands go and therefore getting off balance and allowing Canelo to look stronger as he landed. This tendency continued to grow after the 7th round knockdown. Canelo was able to catch Trout as he came in and made his punches appear more meaningful.

I have to admit that I was very impress with Canelo’s movement, I know that it might not seemed as much for some people but to me it showed that he’s able to move fluidly and is not just a flatfooted one directional fighter. If he can keep improving his upper body movement and footwork he could really become something special (I’m not impplying that he is nothing special already).

In Trout’s case I think he needs to work a little bit more on his left hand, he constantly threw his jab out there but was unable to follow up with anything meaningful which cost him the fight in the end. He has a decent speed and quick reflexes to knock people down by hitting them whenever they are off balance. Since he’s not a power puncher this could also help him become a damage over time kind of fighter and help him get a couple of stops in later rounds.

I guess that would be all for my “fight review”.
