Comments Thread For: Merchant Doubts Mayweather vs. Canelo Will Be Next

On Saturday night, former HBO analyst Larry Merchant was again in the thick of the action as WBC junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez added the WBA bauble to his collection with a unanimous decision victory over former champion Austin Trout.

Calling the contest from ringside for Golden Boy Promotions’ international broadcast, Merchant seemed to favor Alvarez’s precise punching over Trout’s determined fortitude, with a seventh round knockdown scored by ‘Canelo’ certainly helping his cause.

Three judges would agree, as scores of 118-109, 116-111, and 115-112 all favored the Jalisco, Mexico native.

The longer Floyd waits the less likely he is to win. I say take the kid on later on this year and shut up the critics. No rematch neither.

Larry Merchant keeping it real like always. He's absolutely right about the Mayweather situation. Floyd doesn't want any part of Canelo. Floyds probably gonna pick on some 140 pounder after the Guerrero fight.

You'd be upset if Floyd fought the Peterson-Matthysse winner, who would clearly be the best at 140, aside from maybe Danny Garcia???

Canelo didn't dominate last night, and looked less than impressive a lot of the fight. Let Canelo prove his worth fighting the Lara/Angulo winner too.

Wouldnt be surprised if it was Danny Garcia after he knocks out Zab.

Ha Golden Boy even took Larry Meechant with them to Showtime.

I could see Floyd's 5th and 6th fight being Canelo Alvarez, there will be so much money that a rematch will be guaranteed. Mayweather will be 38 by then.

Who should Canelo face next? He could take a big money fight with Cotto.

Alvarez becoming a megastar is going to come down to the level of opposition he faces. If he wants to get big PPVs he's going to need a good dancing partner. Mayweather of course is an obvious choice, but other fighters like Quillin, Lara, Martinez, GGG, and Angulo are all great matchups that shows he's really serious about being great and would attract fans (casual and hardcore alike). I wish Kirkland wasn't on injured reserve because that would have been a good action fight, but I got Canelo winning that one.

I agree, I would love to see Martinez/Alvarez at 154. That would be a huge fight as well.

I still say the fight happens 1 year from the Guerrero fight, it could be next and be very big they let it build a bit more and it is huge. I think both will fight decent guys in the fall but decent guys that they should be able to handle.
