Question for multi sport watchers

Can you think of anything in any other sport that is more subjective, inconsistent and imprecise as boxing scoring? Obviously since the scoring in other sports is fairly straight forward only the officiating can be evaluated. Is nba/nfl officiating this bad? what about umpires in baseball? What about Hockey or soccer? Can anyone think of anything in other sports as dubious as scoring for boxing?

I Agree with you that the answer appears to be simple and obvious but NSB threads have proven to me that it almost never seems to be the case lol. I am certain there is someone here who is going to disagree.

anything with a subjective scoring system is.... subjective. synchronized diving is 100% subjective, the same way scoring a boxing match is 100% subjective (aside from knockdowns and stoppages, which a ref decides.)


boxing is different, though. it's much more often corrupted. it's easily corruptible.

promotors pay and select judges. they're the judges bosses. if you want big fights you tote the party line. if it's a local fight the judges are local.

Somehow, despite a set of scoring criteria, boxing scoring is very open to interpretation because some judges don't really stick with those criteria. Clean punching is often negated by volume punchers who don't land much (Lara - Williams, Hopkins - Calzaghe) and then you've got the problem of even rounds. Some judges don't like giving them, so will always look for someone to give a round to, some people don't mind giving even rounds... it really is a very difficult sport to judge, really.

Do judges have to do any training to get their jobs? Because surely, if they don't, it would be a good idea to do something so judges stick to a similar set of criteria.

i guess you could say mma, but its more easier to judge, if you get a takedown you win the round and only 3 rounds

Nothing in this world I have ever seen is as subjective, there were people who think Trout won by multiple rounds, I think maybe some people don't get that punches are missing.

Even though there are other sports that have subjective scoring I have not witnessed one that can diverge from the scoring criteria in the way boxing does. The announcers have even added to their commentary the volatility of the judges scoring.

Criteria like ring generalship you don't even hear discussed. And what one judges looks at as good defense is viewed as high activity by the one throwing the punch by another judge. I also wonder what training do boxing judges receive if any.
