Curious, why when I started moving my feet my hips sometimes moved + sometimes didnt?

When I first started learning how to punch I would do what my instructor told me and thats to pretend to put out a ciggerette with my foot.

This sometimes moved my hips and sometimes didnt.

I want to know why it sometimes worked and sometimes didnt?

Like now my hips are moving more consistantly thank God but for a long time I had trouble getting them to work some days they just didnt work at all and other days they worked perfectly all day.

What accounts for this? Scientifically whats going on? I appear to be doing or trying to do the exact same motion each time ie putting out the ciggerette but sometimes my hips rotated and sometimes they didnt. ?????

Probably just need more work. SOunds if you aren't really use to using your himps to generate power, but that is where almost all of your power will generate from. That goes for a lot of things involving many sports. I threw javelin at an elite level so I know all about that.

I improved 30 feet my second year throwing because I got use to generating my power from the hips. Also proper footwork. You need to be in the right position to even think about generating power from the hips.

I totally agree the hip power dwafs even the leg drive that assists the rotation for say a cross, hips are deadly weapons once you get them working.

So how did you get your hips working more effectively? Is it pure repititon and getting a feeling for it or is there more to it?

Why is footwork and and position so important? For me I can only move my hips via using my feet, is that what you mean?

Repetition is key. (Proper repetition) Different variations of cleans are great for improving hip power.

Also, stretching and calisthenics are a must. Loosen those hips up and get them working. You want to be fluid and explosive. You can have power, but without mobility it is useless.

What i mean is if you are off balance you won't be able to generate that power from the hips. Stand with your feet together and throw a punch, or just stand in an awkward position and try. Then stand in your proper form and throw a punch. Basically if you aren't in the proper position you will be throwing arm punches.

Edit, I just noticed my gif, you can just see the hip drive in his punch.
