Why do people rank Canelo higher than Trout?

I feel like Trout has done more than Canelo just with his one fight with Cotto. I mean maybe to some people's eyes, that's not a big deal. But even if it's true, it's still more than what Canelo has done. It has to be, right? The only way I see people ranking Canelo higher is if they are ranking him based on his potential. Because I really do see great potential in Canelo as well. But I thought ranking was based on what fighters have done. Not what they're going to do. I feel like potential should have nothing to do with ranking.

You won't have to worry about the ranking this coming Saturday.

Like I said before the Trout/Cotto fiasco was the biggest flip-flop of recent memory. Seems like Trouts win means that canelo and anyone else for the matter would have beaten that (shot) Cotto. Who only became shot the minute Trout was announced the winner.
