Comments Thread For: Juan Diaz Stops Cuevas, Belmontes Edges Diaz

American Bank Center, Corpus Christi, Texas - Before a crowd of 3,200 fans, former lightweight king Juan Diaz (36-4, 18KOs) returned after more than two years away from the ring to stop Pipino Cuevas Jr. (15-10, 13 KOs) in the sixth round of action. Diaz came out swinging but he was rusty and at times appeared to be very rusty. Cuevas, the son of the former world champion by the same name, took a pound near the end of the contest and he was a bloody mess before the fight was stopped by referee Mark Calo-oy

w/the ack of skill Cuevas brought Diaz should have had him ot far earlier, even w/Cuevas's running...Diaz talked about ring rust after, but ring rust is removed in training, not the ring...my 1st thought was he was 2 heavy & flabby...can't c him as a threat @ 140....

Diaz was 135.5 at the weigh in, he wants to be King of 135 again not 140. And knocking Cuevas out in the first round does nothing for Diaz, I was hoping it would go the whole 10 rounds, the more rounds the better for someone coming back off such a long lay-off. Ring rust is not going to be removed in a 8 week training camp after being out of the ring for 3 years, it takes 2 or 3 tune-up fights and training camps for the ring rust to be fully removed.
