He never said he broke his hand. When Merchant asked if it could be broken after the Vasquez fight, he said "I had no idea, but there's something definatley wrong with it and it's very painful"

Fair enough, but it was directly after the fight and that was his best guess at the time. It was an injury he got during the fight, not before. He did say in the interview he wasn't sure what it was. And after the proper medical examination, he did reveal it was just a really bad cut. And it's not as if he was lying this entire time about a broke hand.
