Comments Thread For: Mayweather-Guerrero: Byrd To Ref, Judges Also Named

The referee for the May 4 welterweight title fight between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Robert Byrd.

Byrd was selected at the April 8 meeting of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The other candidates to be the third man in the ring for that bout were Kenny Bayless, Vic Drakulich and Tony Weeks.

The judges, meanwhile, will be Duane Ford and Jerry Roth of Nevada, and Julie Lederman of New York.

The other candidates to score that bout were Burt Clements, Richard Houck, Patricia Morse Jarman, C.J. Ross and Glenn Trowbridge of Nevada, Don Griffin of Texas, and Michael Pernick of Florida.

There were no objections to these names from either fighter’s camp.

Byrd has not been the referee for any of Mayweather’s previous fights, according to BoxRec.com. That website shows Byrd as being the ref in Guerrero’s 2006 fight with Orlando Salido and his 2003 stoppage win over Jose Luis Tula.

Byrd sucks as a ref, he loses his cool to easy and gets too involved.

Safe to say he wont let Robert work.

It's a conspiracy, Floyd hand picks these ref's to win fights. He doesn't just win because he's good. Conspiracy! Conspiracy! Conspiracy!

They didn't wanna bring Cortez out of retirement cause then it would be too obvious. Idk much about half of the judges not selected but the 3 selected suck. I'd probably take the unknowns over these crooked knowns.

Byrd is the right man for the job.

Robert Byrd? No, I'm talking about Chris Byrd.

aint ford and roth the ones that have had bad cards recently, pac/bradley is one that comes to mind maybe im wrong. either way, hopefully this fight ends in a stoppage anyways, no reason floyd shouldnt be able to put him down inside 10

Yep. The ref will play a key role in this fight. Guerrero wants an inside fight. Floyd wants the opposite. If the ref constantly breaks, Guerrero is doomed.
