Any fairly experienced boxers here? Re Hips!?

Like im just getting my hips down and its a great feeling to have hip power in my punches.

I was just wondering were you able to rotate your hips naturally as a beginner or did you need a mental que like squish the bug or put out the cigerette to get your hips to move? So did you have direct control over them rotating or did you need a mental cue?

As you punched over and over and over again, what happens to your mental cue do you need it anymore? Do you have to think "put out cigerette with foot? Or do you just hit with your hips without theinking? Also no you have used your hips over and over can you just rotate them directly? To what extent can you use them directly that normal people can not?

Since nobody seems to be answering I will. My experience was that when you really try to punch with your right hand (assuming you are not a southpaw-if you are, everything is reversed) you will automatically rotate your hips and upper body towards the direction of the punch. If you don't and just stand there and punch you won't punch a dent in a pat of butter, also you will not have any reach. Stance is very important.

You should also feel your feet transferring the weight at the same time. I've seen very good boxers who, when punching with the right hand, bring the back foot a bit forward by their action. So really, the power begins at the feet and travels up to the end of your fist.

At the same time, as you probably have already seen, there are times when a looping, curved punch is effective, but a good solid well planted straight left jab can nullify this to a large degree, DEPENDING on your judging your distance properly. I always used a straight left in a similar mannet to a fencer, with plenty on it.

I'm sure there are lots of videos explaining this much better than I can. Also there are posters who are self professed experts who can detail it better. If you watch some of Vladimir Klitschko's earlier fights before he began to do so much pawing, say, in the Ray Mercer fight, you'll see a picture-perfect left jab with a lot of power on it. .

Remember, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line

Mental cue usually just when your starting out in my opinion. when im hitting the bag i dont even think about it. Same with the speed bag when i first started i had to do like a count in my head to time the bag. now i just do my drills with out thinking about it.

I worked many years as a boxer. the toughest part of the job was when I'd get a crate with a dozen crazy bob cats or something in it'. It was tough but I'd done get each one of those little rascals into separate boxes, nailed up tight and ready for delivery. mamma says that I must be the greatest boxer that she's ever seen. But I don't know nothin' bout using your hips whilst boxin'. I prefer to use my hammer. That's all I got to say 'bout that.
