Comments Thread For: Photos: Zou Shiming Makes Pro Debut in Macau, China

The most decorated amateur boxer in Chinese history, Zou Shiming, won his first match of his first professional competition at the Cotai Arena in Macau. The venue was specially decorated for the showdown, which was titled "Fists of Gold," in honor of his Olympic success. Zou’s swept Mexico’s Eleazar Valenzuela over four rounds in their flyweight bout. Zou is widely regarded as one of the trailblazers of Chinese boxing. He won two consecutive Olympic gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 games in London in the light flyweight division. He is the first and only Chinese boxer to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing.

Shiming is 31 years old and this was his longest competitive fight...4 rounds. Gold medals are great, but until he's fought some 10 rounders against top professional competition, it's really hard to judge what he's got. At his age (getting up there for a flyweight) it's time to get to work...pronto.

Just ask Brian Viloria (35) what a hungry, younger lion brings to the table over 12 rounds!

It's funny how similar Zou Shimming is to Guillermo Rigondeaux, amateur wise & at the age they turned pro.. Rigondeaux won 2 Olympic gold medals, 2 amateur world championship gold medals & 1 amateur world cup & turned pro at the age of 30, while Zou won 2 Olimpic gold medals,1 Olympic bronze medal & 2 amateur world championship Gold medals & 1 silver & turned pro at the age of 31..They both even started training as a pro with the same trainer(Freddy Roach), except that Rigindeaux didn't stay with Roach & We still have to see if Zou sticks around.. There isn't much difference between the both of them, yet a lot of people praised Rigondeaux(even before he had his 1st pro fight) & here some are already criticizing Zou for turning pro so late & saying(something that's obvious) that the pros are not the same as the amateurs especially when thy have to go into more rounds..He just had his first pro fight, so people should wait till the guy has a few fights under his belt & until he fights someone that's ranked to see how or if he adapts to the professional level & to see if he's really good or not at that level to then criticize or praise the guy..
