Can't compare Mayweather to him. Mayweather's defense comes from fundamentally sound boxing. A better comparison is Locche and Whitaker. Prime Mayweather used legs first and foremost.

The current Mayweather, who does more blocking and covering up rather than moving with his legs is better comparable with prime Winky Wright and a little bit of James Toney. That Pep, Locche and Whitaker type of defense is called elusiveness.

Mayweather's defense is in the category of a Hopkins, Winky, fighters like that. They don't look cute using their defense and sometimes can be classified as boring, but you could hardly land on them. Whitaker, Pep, Locche were all about the "Wow did you see that?" type of defense. In fact Mayweather, Hopkins, Winky defense you have to actually see it better in the slow motion replay to see that nothing really landed on them in what ever instance you want to see, but to the naked eye it looks like they were hit. While the Whitaker type of defense it's obvious the opponent missed because exaggerated and noticeable head movement is being used.

I never said that his defense style was like Mayweather? I simply stated that defense wise overall he was good. You could rarely hit the little guy clean..

Nicolino Locche was really exceptional, a true defensive genius. I remember him when I was a kid and everybody marvelled at him. Locche was a nicotine addict and I've seen him puff away as a cigarette whilst his corner hid him between rounds. Astonishing.

He's the only boxer ever to be somewhat compared to the unique Young Griffo, by oldtimers who saw them both.

Locche is 3-4 classes above Mayweather. There is just no comparison when pure defence is considered.

It isn't merely "elusibveness. Locche could stand squarely in front of a good opponent, with his hands down or behind his back, and couldn't be touched. Not all the time of course but.......

Locche is known to be one of the best defensive fighters of all time. Next to Pep, Whitaker and Wilfred Benitez.

I appreciate your opinion and i'm always willing to negotiate. So let's say 2-3 classes better. It's no wonder they called him "The Untouchable, because he literally was. His record was 117 wins with 4 losses and only 14 KOs. Special. When I was young I saw some of his fights and I think there are a few on Youtube. And you'd have to see what he's doing, he made it look so simple. I used to see him in the minute breaks with his seconds around him, puffing away at a cigarette, a condirmed addict. How he did it...... ?? There's been nobody like him since. Whitaker WAS evasive, but nothing like Locche. Chalk and cheese. He's the very best defensive boxer i've seen in my lifetime, and I've seen Pep and others.

Mayweather although very good at what he does is not special. Locche has been said to have somewhat resembled the Legend (and i very rarely used this word) Young Griffo, who was unique to this day. One of a kind. But only somwewhat, the samw way that only Benny Leonard is said to resemble Jack Johnson's style and ability.

You should read up on Griffo sometime, that standing on a handk and still couldn't be hit, kept him drunk most of his career both in anechief d out of the ring. He used to do it for drinks. Iwas brought upon the histories of all the oldtimers and have more respect for them than today's fans. Tht'a wht I am.

                    Hi Edgar,

I've only seen clips of Locche. I would say his ability was essentially pure talent, not skill. I don't want to get involved in semantics, but that's what Nicolino's ability seemed to be: pure, inborn talent. Mayweather indeed has great talent, but he relies more on skill than Locche did. Skill is learned; talent cannot be taught. "El Intocable" was an amazing example of defensive boxing talent.
