Comments Thread For: Insider Notebook: Martinez-Golovkin, Quillin, Alvarado-Rios

By Robert Morales - Flash back to September 1999 and the welterweight title unification fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad Jr. at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Everybody in the world thought it was going to be a hard-hitting, toe-to-toe match. Both fighters said as much during the promotion.

Trinidad was down for that, but De La Hoya took that away from fans by deciding to steer clear of any prolonged exchanges. In the last three rounds, he ran as much as a fighter can run. The judges in Las Vegas must have hated that because they scored Trinidad a majority-decision winner. Most reporters had De La Hoya winning, but many of them weren't thrilled that De La Hoya had robbed fans of what was expected to be a thriller between the Mexican-American and Puerto Rican sluggers.

Despite the high praise doled out by HBO announcers on Saturday, Mike Alvarado did his own version of the De La Hoya shuffle during his rematch with Brandon Rios at Mandalay Bay. To be fair, Alvarado fought a lot more than De La Hoya did against Trinidad. And he often landed a stiff right hand while absorbing a lot of punishment himself. But he moved a lot in the second half of the fight, especially, at times looking like De La Hoya did, dancing around the ring. [Click Here To Read More]

Rios can't fight like Alvarado did. He's very limited so the only option for him is to go forward throwing punches. Anyone who believes that Rios can box is fooling himself.

Richar Abril laid the blueprint for how to beat Rios. If they want to call it running then I guess that's their prerogative.

What a load of bollocks, it was an amazing fight, and a tremendously brave performance by Alvarado. The fact that he survived the second round alone is testament to the mans's heart, to suggest he spent the majority of the fight on his bike is unfair.

Incredibly biased article, may as well be a Team Rios press release.

Hoya -Trinadad comparison is ******ed. And no, we did not get something less. The fight was better than the first.

Alvarado also threw more punches than Rios in last few rounds so complaining about it is dumb.

Mike boxed yeah, he moved, looked a little awkward like Abel Sanchez said but hey so what.he FOUGHT too.. and Rios is usually still able to catch up to movers so what is this about? I think he was just rocked pretty bad again in the fight and was slowed down so he couldn't build the momentum his style relies on. He'll never bother with D, so his conditioning will be key from here on, hate to see an unfinished product like him and I always wonder what weight is doing to him ...anway I think he can still improve on stamina and catch up even if fighters on that level move on him.

                What a terrible article!

Alvarado may have chose to box but he certainly didn't shy away from mixing it up!
