(SPOKANE, WASH.) – The 2013 USA Boxing National Championships rolled into the second day of competition on Tuesday as participants and fans alike began to acclimate to all the rule changes being made in the sport. Once again, two rings of action filled the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash., with all of the competitors boxing to advance in their individual divisions and weight classes.
Twenty-seven preliminary round contests highlighted afternoon action with boxers competing in the youth males’ lightweight and senior men’s welterweight division alongside elite men’s bouts in the lightweight, middleweight and light heavyweight classes. The jam-packed youth males’ division took the ring for the second straight day with 12 bouts of preliminary round action and once again, the competition was hotly contested. Reigning Junior Olympic national champion Christian Bermudez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) fell to Gary Antwuan Russell (Capitol Heights, Md.) in their preliminary round match-up. The following bout ended quickly with Genaro Gamez (San Diego, Calif.) taking a knockout victory at the 2:40 mark of the first round of their showdown. Gamez and Russell will face off for a spot in the medal round on Wednesday.
