MYFOXNY EXCLUSIVE: Law enforcement sources say that boxing champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero was arrested Thursday morning on a weapons charge at JFK Airport.

Guerrero was arrested by Port Authority Police with a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun.

He was attempting to check-in for a flight to Las Vegas at the time of his arrest. He remains in custody and was to be transferred to Queens central booking later in the day.

Sources say that Guerrero went to the Delta ticket counter in Terminal 2 and declared the gun to the ticket agent. As required by law, the agent called the Port Authority Police.

Sources say that Guerrero's gun is legally registered in the state of California but he is not licensed to carry the weapon in New York. The gun was not loaded at the time of his arrest.

Guerrero is being charged with criminal possession of a weapon, according to sources. It's not clear yet what other charges he may face once the case is turned over to the Queens District Attorney.

Guerrero is scheduled to fight Floyd Mayweather on May 4, 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for Mayweather's WBC Welterweight title.

Guerrero's had previously given up a title to care for his wife, Casey, after she was diagnosed with leukemia. The couple talked about their cancer fight in a recent appearance on The 700 Club.

So umm what's the big deal here? He followed procedures, the gun wasn't loaded and the its legal. But he's being charged with CRIMINAL possession?

Why did LA allow the gun thru?

So WTF is a man supposed to do nowadays? Do the wrong thing and get ****ed. Do the right thing and get ****ed regardless.

The big deal is he doesn't have a licence to carry the fire arm in New York ergo his possession of the firearm is illegal. Why/If L.A. allowed the gun to go through I do not know.

Yea but he's traveling around who knows where he came from before probably didn't really have a choice besides throwing the gun away knowing he was going to NY

What part of "he is not licensed to carry the weapon in New York" is following procedure?

He didnt do the right thing, which is not carry a gun into the countries strictest gun law when he isnt allowed to

Because he doesn't have a license in NY to carry a firearm. Maybe naive to the situation, he probably went to check in the gun and the counter person simply called the Police as simple protocol. Guerrero can't be THAT naive though.

The licensing authority may require the licensee go through firearms training and education, or under what conditions permit holder can possess handguns or carry a concealed weapon. Additionally, New York does not recognize concealed carry permits issued by any other state, and non-residents are generally forbidden from obtaining a New York State permit.
I realize this is Wiki, but the NY Penal code also clearly states the above paragraph

As for why LAX let it through, I'm sure they're unaware of state by state penal laws. I just see no reason why this man would need to travel with a gun. Hire a security guard if NY is too scary for you
