MYFOXNY EXCLUSIVE: Law enforcement sources say that boxing champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero was arrested Thursday morning on a weapons charge at JFK Airport.
Guerrero was arrested by Port Authority Police with a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun.
He was attempting to check-in for a flight to Las Vegas at the time of his arrest. He remains in custody and was to be transferred to Queens central booking later in the day.
Sources say that Guerrero went to the Delta ticket counter in Terminal 2 and declared the gun to the ticket agent. As required by law, the agent called the Port Authority Police.
Sources say that Guerrero's gun is legally registered in the state of California but he is not licensed to carry the weapon in New York. The gun was not loaded at the time of his arrest.
Guerrero is being charged with criminal possession of a weapon, according to sources. It's not clear yet what other charges he may face once the case is turned over to the Queens District Attorney.
Guerrero is scheduled to fight Floyd Mayweather on May 4, 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for Mayweather's WBC Welterweight title.
Guerrero's had previously given up a title to care for his wife, Casey, after she was diagnosed with leukemia. The couple talked about their cancer fight in a recent appearance on The 700 Club.

Posted from Boxingscene.com App for AndroidOriginally posted by WikiNew York is a "may-issue" state, in that the individual licensing official (typically a local police chief or sheriff) has discretion to issue a license or permit to possess handguns, or carry a concealed firearm. The licensing authority may require the licensee go through firearms training and education, or under what conditions permit holder can possess handguns or carry a concealed weapon. Unlike other "may issue" states where permits are typically valid statewide regardless of the locality in which they are issued, New York State concealed carry permits are not automatically valid statewide, and some localities do not recognize permits issued from elsewhere in the state. Additionally, New York does not recognize concealed carry permits issued by any other state, and non-residents are generally forbidden from obtaining a New York State permit.
As for why LAX let it through, I'm sure they're unaware of state by state penal laws. I just see no reason why this man would need to travel with a gun. Hire a security guard if NY is too scary for youLast edited by JmH Reborn; 03-28-2013, 10:06 AM.Comment
