Why do some trainers freak out every time a boxer decides to make a change? I respect Mr Morgan and am not directing my tirade at him but too often trainers tend to freak out, I know it's their living but am sure he would get another fighter or he would get to bring up another fighter just like he did Berto, they get paid well especially when they get the fighters to the top so am sure they are not scraping around for money, Berto for example has been sucking HBO's money for a while so am sure Mr Morgan would have made a decent amount of money while Berto was going through the "Hollywood" period.... Ortiz trainer (Danny Garcia) I can feel sorry for but apart from him most of these trainers have a numbers of boxers at the top which brings them good pay days.
The decision is way to late for Berto. He was bought up the easy route and thus had some real bad habits (Lack of inside fighting, no ring IQ, poor footwork, terrible balance) This I think is a result of fighting soft touches and blowing them away with ease. He never learned to improve as there was no need. This is evident in the Ortiz fight, he thought he could go out, throw everything at 110% and win. After a few rounds his stamina was shot and had no idea of what to do to get the win.
He should have been taught the basics straight outta the olympics, with his speed, power and willingness to fight on even when hurt he should have been so much more than a stepping stone to a Floyd fight.
as long as I've seen Berto, he's never improved. that's the fault of the trainer.
at this point, no trainer can help Berto. just like no trainer can help Khan. both guys just are great athletes, and only have enough skill to use their athleticism. for both Khan and Berto, all Virgil can do is give them back their confidence and belief in themselves. there's nothing really Virgil can do to change them. he can teach them all the defense he wants, but once they get hit, they'll return to what they know, not what they trained for
