The assignment is Writing to Inform. I know I want to inform the class about boxing, but not 100% sure what topic. What do you guys think about a B-Hop essay? Any suggestions?
Writing a report for college English course.

If you're writing about a boxer, B-Hop is a 1st class choice.
Oldest champ twice.
Record middleweight defenses.
Former undisputed middleweight champion.
The taker of souls.
Bounced back from the wrong direction in life to become a role model. -
Hahaha, hell yeah man, that's what I was thinking. I think I'll also include "taker of souls" if I can have your blessing.
A have a secondary idea as well. I could do a chronology of old champs; Archie Moore, George Foreman, B-Hop, etc. This is a tough decision.Comment

You could write an essay on what it is that motivates or allows fighters like George Foreman, Hopkins, JMM, to perform so well at a latter age. Is it their mental outlook, diet, genetics, all of the above. Use each as an example. Bhop talks about Whole Foods Grocery which is an upscale natural foods store and his regimin, how he treats his body as a temple. Foreman talked about how he was working in his Church as a Pastor and realized they did not have enough money to support the Church so he got back into Boxing. You can find information about that on the Net. Use their quotes. Find some articles and interviews of those guys and tie it up in an essay. Maybe you can find some stuff on Archie Moore. I know someone who knew Archie but you can find articles. Find perhaps other fighters who fought at a late age or just stay with 3 fighters for the essay. Call it "Fighting Age, Young at Heart" with a subtitle called "Rising above the Jokes, the Naysayers, and becoming Champ again". Or something like that.Last edited by richardt; 03-16-2013, 05:18 PM.Comment

F**ck yeah man. That was one of the ideas I was considering. Maybe 3 guys who defied the odds and shocked the world with historical wins at an advanced age.You could write an essay on what it is that motivates or allows fighters like George Foreman, Hopkins, JMM, to perform so well at a latter age. Here is a half poem I wrote a while back and it matches your Avatar, George Foreman. You can use it in your writing if you like:
Words dropped to the floor,
when they told Big Ol'e George
"Hang it up, Boxin' is a young man's game"
But after all the pain and jokes,
he carried his pride right through those ropes
Kneeled down an' prayed
an' took that title away.
I wish I could bank a dime
Every time someone said "can't be done"
People like that couldn't see the light
If they were starin’ right at the sun
So if you come across a "no can do"
It don't matter what
Don't give up
You owe it to you
The writing style I am using there with words like an' and Boxin' are what is called "Folksy" which is a conversational style that is used in music all the time. Those aren't misspelled words. "Gonna" is another example of Folksy. Folksy is unpretentious and the antithesis of the Queens English but effective because it is conversational and talks to the typical person. You could do a whole subject on Folksy writing in songs, articles, books, etc. Some of the greatest hit songs in history have the Folksy type of lyrics. Another example is "I bet those Brothers must have heard it all, Tryin' to build Wings, thinkin' they could fly".Last edited by richardt; 03-16-2013, 05:55 PM.Comment

I was literally going to suggest archie moore.
I would seriously recommend Emilth Griffth, a bisexual during an era where it was almost a death sentence (he refused to openly admit it for a long time because it would have been career suicide). He accidentally killed Benny Paret in the ring (he didn't know it at the time) and while Paret and Griffith were being treated in the same hospital Griffith tried to repeatedly enter Parets room because he heard he was in critical condition but was never allowed.
When released from hospital he received hate mail and abuse on the streets because they believed he intentionally killed Paret. He has openly admitted feeling guilt for 40 years (parets son met him and forgave him but Parets widow refused to see Griffith until her death).
Griffith fought Monzon, Benny Briscoe, Jose napoles, Nino Benvenuti, Joey Archer, **** Tiger, Alan Minter, Vito Antifermo and Paret and has wins over Benvenuti, Archer, Tiger, Briscoe. That's a lot of ATG's and HOFers. He then trained Juan Laporte and Wilfred Benitez.
He was almost beaten to death in 1992 after leaving a gay bar (motivation for attack wasn't known but since police in the 1990's weren't as open to prosecuting gay motivated crimes because of lack of sympathy).
He now has dementia due to boxing and requires 24/7 care. Brilliant and sad story of on of boxing's greatest welterweights.
I'm an article writer for the site that hypes fights and these sorts of pieces of old time and obscure (to new boxing fans) rarely get written but articles of people like Hopkins are always getting written because it's the 'flavour of the month' type of thing.Comment
