Comments Thread For: Mendez Eyes Yuriorkis Gamboa, Rocky Martinez Bouts

Newly crowned IBF super featherweight champion Argenis Mendez paid a recent visit to The Boxing Lab, BoxingScene.com's official audio show. Mendez spoke about his victory over Juan Carlos Salgado that took place this past Saturday in Southern California. Mendez had lost a controversial decision to Salgado in 2011 and was ecstatic to have righted what many felt was a bad decision.

"I am very happy. I feel very good with the performance I put on. To me it was like another challenge. I went to Mexico and thought I would win. I'm not saying they aren't fair or are fair but I thought I won the fight. It was a difficult fight (the first time) and I trained hard to make sure I would get the win this time," Mendez explained.

Mendez really came alive in his last fight. You could tell he wanted to m,ake a statement and is now a big player in the division. Look forward to seeing him again.

Argenis Mendez is a pretty good boxer I m following him since the amateurs..he did impress me back them and now he is still looking dominant..he fought with Rigondeaux back them in a terrific fight, he got knock out by still and impressive effort..

I don't see Juanma fighting him. It's too risky for Juanma right now imho. But it would be a great fight because I think they both would come forward. I also think that a fight with Gamboa would be interesting due to their styles but again I don't really see Gamboa taking this fight neither. Let's wait and see. Mendez has the goods and is the goods or so it appears.

I'm really not too bothered who is next in line for Gamboa. Regardless of who it is, let's see it.

I was disappointed when I read that Uchiyama is fighting Jaider Parra in Tokyo on May 6. I was even more disappointed when I read the following lines in the ESPN.com article announcing the fight: "I wish to keep winning until my ultimate confrontation with another interim titlist, Yuriorkis Gamboa," said Uchiyama, who is coming off an eighth-round knockout of then-undefeated interim titlist Bryan Vasquez on Dec. 31. Gamboa, who won an interim belt earlier in December, is probably headed to the lightweight division and unlikely to face Uchiyama.

So, it appears Uchiyama wants the fight, but Yuri is headed North.

I'm not too pleased about the jump to 135, seems like he's really pushing his limits. His frame suggest 130 is as high as he should be.

There are also good fights to be made at 130, but I guess the bigger money is at 135 and Yuri obviously believes in his talent to carry him through.

Neither am I, but I guess he and his handlers have a better idea of his physical limitations. In any event, we agree 135 promises more money, so I can see why they'd want Yuri to climb in weight.
