Bernard Hopkins Talks PEDS
The oldest boxer to win a major title, Bernard Hopkins joined Jim Rome on his radio program. Hopkins, 48, scored a unanimous decision over Tavoris Cloud to claim the IBF light heavyweight championship Saturday night. Given his age and the culture of sports today, Jim asked Hopkins if he was using any performance enhancers.
“No, never,” Hopkins said. “I don’t even like wine in my shrimp scampi.”
Hopkins wanted to make sure everyone knows his stance on PED’s and how he has achieved his success.
“You all got a guy… corporate America, mainstream America,” said Hopkins. “You got a guy named Bernard Hopkins that’s closer to 50 than 30 and he’s telling you all, this is how you do it. The kids, the other athletes, high school, college, pros, you know what? You can do it the right and straight way and I’m the poster boy for that. Nobody gave me that job, I took it and I’m bold and loud with that message.”
Hopkins thinks he knows why his achievements haven’t turned into major endorsement deals.
“Because mainstream America don’t care two (expletive) about boxers or boxing, period.”
