Look at who was fighting at 160 in the 80's.
Hagler
SRL
Hearns
Duran
Not optimum for some, but that is a pretty killer list, in the modern era.Comment

Traditionally the middleweight division has always been regarded as the strongest. Look at the welterweight-middleweight division when Robinson was fighting. It was far stronger than the 90s heavyweight div. They used to write about this very thing, and what emerged was that in the older days, a good middleweight could even fight well against a good light-heavy, or occasionally heavyweight. They used as examples Stanley Ketchell, Bob Fitzsimmons, the Gibbons brothers, Ted :Kid" Lewis, Mickey Walker and a few others. I think Young Stribling was one, before he became a true light-heavy.Comment

1990-95 middleweights was a great era in terms of quality:
Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Julian Jackson, Michael Nunn, McCallum, Benn, Eubank.
However, they didn't fight each other much (at middleweight).
Jones>Hopkins
Toney>Nunn
Toney>McCallum
Eubank>BennComment

90's HW is very very good, you probably had more strength in depth than the 70's but individually the boxers might not have been AS good.
But Lennox, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Vitali (late 90's) is a very good group of elite Heavyweights
Then the fringe guys like Grant, Tua, Ruddock, Rahman, McCall, Mercer, Moorer, old Foreman, Morrison, old Holmes, Bruno and Ibeabuchi.
Then a step below are guys like Akinwande, Golata, Seldon, Botha, Norris, Tucker and Hide.
Thats a very very very deep and strong group of heavyweights.Comment
