Deontay Wilder, can he be the champion?

It's been four and a half years since Deontay Wilder turned professional at the end of 2008, and it's been an interesting journey so far.

Wilder has notched up an impressive looking 27-0 record, all inside the distance, the kid can obviously punch, and he has impressive height to add to that power.

The problems with Wilder are for me, two-fold.

First, his impressive record, really isn't worth a lot. So far Wilders people have spent almost 5 years proving the same point over and over again, Wilder can knock out poor opposition. His 27-0 record has only just positioned him inside the top 30 of Boxrec heavyweights. Compared to his peers with less visually appealing records, he is lagging behind by a distance. He is also learning very little, other than to throw a right hand over and over again.

Second, try as he might, Wilder has not grown into a "big" man. Although he is 6'7" he simply does not have the frame to translate height into size. Two fights ago he turned up ridiculously bulky, looking like a 6'7" bodybuilder from the waist up, he weighed only 229lbs.

I think these issues are going to cause him problems. I already have question marks about his durability, I have seen him on the canvas, and I have seen that he gets those spastic leg movements when hit that I associate with very poor punch resistance. At around 225lbs, how is he going to react when he gets hit by a Klitschko? I do not belive he is solid enough to take punishment.

Wilder has his advocates, and i'd like to hear the plus side of him.

How do you feel he will develop, can he be the champ?

He can when there's a vacant title and, most likely, the WBC puts him up against the hamburgler again

If your question is can he be a HW champion? Sure he can.

If your question is can he beat the Klitschko's for the title? ...

He could be the next Michael Grant.

Very much doubt he's the next Wlad.

I got curious when I saw his record on boxrec.com, hope Wilder won't turned out like Alex Stewart when he fought his first true test.

Why not!!!! Today the Klitz bros are champions and NO ONE thought they could be champs when they started!! ( I can't believe they are still) hahaha Jimmy Braddock won the title against the "Calif. Monster" no one else other than Joe Loius wanted to fight! Leon beat Ali with less than 10 fights as a pro!! So why not Wilder?

The kid has some good wins in the amatuers but didn't have a long or extended career! He is just hitting the age (27) when heavyweights hit the beginning of maturation! He has a promoter who understands that time is on they're side. Also a young trainer in Mark Breland who has an amatuer pedigree and a pro career that he can draw from to help this kid develop his style.
Its very true that they need to step up in their oposition but their at a tuff stage to find what they need because the C+ to B- fighters are far and few in between at heavyweight!! So you see the same level of guys, thats the way its been for some time now.
Its not just learning boxing skills its all about the repetition in the preperation of the fight itself! Might sound very simple to a fan but learning how to control your own rhythmns and how you conduct yourself leading up to a fight are things that need to be worked on. This kid knows his competition is there for him to whip up on and theres a pressure to perform even against so-called lesser talents. When he finally does step up I think he can relax more and not feel the pressure to perform!
I think they'll make a move up soon but in reality I'd step him up in about two more years. At 29 he has a 6 year career ahead of him and if he's sucessful thats 12 fights (2 a year) and thats millions of dollars to be made! Ray.

He could snatch the WBC when Vitali retires.

I really don't see him becoming the lineal champ. Absolutely not. Everyone out there will need a fluke punch to dethrone Wladimir.

(and that fluke punch will come. Even if his opponents are 10 to 1 underdogs, once in a while it will happen. Just like you'll roll a 6 on the dice 1 in 6 times)
