He loved food, and there were rumors he has a real eating disorder
He’s my favorite fighter of all time to, and I think ranks right behind Roy for best of his era, even though I think his resume is better then Roy’s and B-HopComment

Speaking of Toney and Hopkins, start at 8:07 and see what B-Hop thinks about fighters who fall off the top:

I remember he was in terrible shape before the Jones fight, he was eating fast food and had to drop a heap of weight in the last week before the fight. Cant remember how much it was but it was fair bit, defiently hindered his performance. And that was a huge super fight at the time and he didnt take it serious lol.
There is a writting interview on him somewhere, he calims had he taken that fight with jones serious and dropped the weight properly, he would of got the W and his hole career would of been different (i.e. he would of been the superstar Jones was)Comment

Toney was ace back in his prime. His fights with McCallum are amazing. And his fight with Nunn, crazy. He was just young, rich and talented and got sidetracked. Happens to a lot of athletes. I'm surprised Jones took as long as he did to fall off.
Some people just have more discipline.Comment

James Toney was actually a football star in high school he almost got a scholarship to Michigan state until he knocked out or got in a fight with Deion Sanders during a scouting trip, he only picked up boxing later on, but in highschool he was always watching those old boxing taps in his spare time and would mimic the moves and stuff and shadow box, his story is pretty cool he had a good boxing iq though, to learn from watching old fights and basically teach yourself is amazing and it actually working.
Toney said before he got into boxing, he was a 190-200 pound running back or something like that, he was pretty big, but his coach told him to cut down to 160 to box.
I think cutting so much weight and gaining it back again will mess with your hormones and make them go out of wack, thats probably why he has thyroid issues, Fernando Vargas has those issues too, but at least now he is able to stay in a healthier weight instead of going up to 250 pounds.Comment
