Not even close to a bum. That word is thrown around way too much on here.

Still good enough reason for credit given to Joe since won in such dominant fashion.

I agree. Boxing Fans on this website seem to think unless your p4p No1 then your a bum. Even the likes of Manny and Floyd get abused for one reason or another. ANY fighter who gets in the ring and wins a world title is not a bum! Lacy was overated for sure, but he still put on a great show for the crowds and was very entertaining to watch. The bloke himself never came across as arrogant, ****y etc he was just very poorly managed and his trainer Dan Birmingham never taught him anything other than the left hook and overhand right. Lacy had the power and chin, he needed a coach to teach how to use his jab to set up attacks and how to use his bulky frame in the peek a boo style ala tyson. By the time he came against Calzaghe he was set in his ways and walked straight into the 1000 odd punches calzaghe hit him with.

Joe calzaghe is a girl. Get over it he's far from ATG. He's a champion and probably British hall of farmer but if you really look at his career its marked by terrible slap stoppages, robberies, and hype job wins.

Roy Jones was irrelavant for almost 5 years when Joe fought him. He cherry picked Hopkins when he was old and knew he didn't have the work rate to outbox Joe cleanly like he would of in his prime, but Hopkins still outpointed him landing the cleaner blows.

          These are Calzaghes best accomplishments.

          Eubanks was past prime C+
          Kessler B+
Robin Reid was robbed point plank
Shot Jones Jr C level win
          Older Hopkins B+
          Lacy C-

He fought euro bums his whole career until he beat an American hype job. Then cherry picked his best opposition besides Kessler his best win. He doesn't have that career defining A level win. He was just an average Joe like Lacy.

If anything, it was that Calzaghe was underrated at the time, and Lacy was overrated.

It's an interesting parallel though on the other end in regards to the Douglas and Calzaghe fights is all, along with their pre-fight perception comparisons.
yeah, i hear you. you were right. as a general outline, it is a similar trajectory.

lacy was terrible. watch his fights please. no skill, clubbing punches and struggled against bums. calzaghe looked almost as bad as lacy though with his slappy punches, early stoppages, getting dropped, and resume full of bums. that's why the odds were so close. hard to pick between 2 unproven fighters. in retrospect people should have picked calzaghe because he had more experience in bum disposal compared to lacy.

good post, no one knew Calzaghe at the time since he'd done nothing except beat largely bums. In fact Lacy had probs done more than Calzaghe before they met, and lets face it Jeff was almost always facing bums. Then he met someone who was better than him, and he got wasted.

Jeff is no bum but hes technically deficient, slow and predictable, much in line with the average Calzaghe defence opponent up till that time. Anyone with semi-decent boxing skills would have torn Jeff up the way Joe did.

However Jeff was American, and that was enough to put the ****s up anyone since Americans are often hot**** MWs and SMWs. Calzaghe himself was scared witless of america evident from his faked fear of flying and his lack of any AMerican opposition who wasnt a total bum up til he was eventually froced by his dad to face Jeff.

Peter Manfredo, Jeff lacy, it's all the same. At least they had been winning fights. I'll give them that.

About as much credit as we give Jones Jr for beating Anthony Hanshaw. The difference was that Hanshaw wasn't backed by HBO who was hyping Lacy as Mini Mike.

At the end of the day, they're the same. Hell, I think they both had been 21 and 0.
