Question for Iceman about J. Toney.

Hi Iceman thanks for taking the time to read this. I appreciate your insight on this board and look forward to purchasing your book. Lights Out is one of my favorite fighters so if you would be so kind to answer Id appreciate it.

    1. Is the fact that Toney was out of shape against Jones overatted? If James was focused and trained hard would he have won or made it competitive?

    2. If James was focused and disciplined and trained hard throughout his career would he be an all-time great?

i'm not the iceman but i've still got insight to offer.

i think even if toney was in shape for the jones fight the result would have been pretty much the same. it would have been a lot more competitive but roy would have ran around pot-shotting all night as usual.

and as far as potentially being an all-time great, i think it's safe to say james already has a nice seat lined up in the hall of fame, he's already a living legend to me but if he can win the heavyweight championship (again) i think it would be safe to call him an all-time great...that's the best thing about lights out too, is that barring any injuries the man is such an amazing fighter he's still got a few good battles in him, so he could definitely solidify himself as one of the best of all time.

It would be interesting to see if RJJ can beat B-Hop at Light Heavy, and if Light's Out can capture a bout if RJJ would have the balls to face James in a rematch at Heavy at this stage in his career!

Like to hear the Iceman's opinion on this!!

I just watched the fight again. Roy didnt pot shot back then. He threw brisk sharp combinations unlike later in his career. What really was impressive in the 8th round Roy was firing a barrage of punches bouncing them off of Toney against the ropes. Lampley then said to Gil Clancy "What other middleweights could throw combinations with that handspeed.. and Gil replied " Jim I havent seen anyone since SRR do that". I know Roy is mostly remembered for the back half of his career but I honestly believe that Rj would have beaten Hagler, Hearns, and Duran.. Too fast...too good

Roy started pot shotting when he moved up to light heavyweight. You didn't see that many punch combinations when Roy was in light heavyweight rather when he was a middleweight or a super middleweight. I still believe the fight between Toney and Jones would turn out the same way even if Toney was in shape. Toney's one weakness is he hates running around the ring. He likes to do his basic counter punching and attack. Roy has the style that can completely shut down Toney's style.

Only a James Toney fan would want to see this demendted idea for a fight, withe veryone knowing RJJ is half-shot these days.

It's a good time to make a name off RJJ. A fight now is as meaningful as Roy's upcoming one with Hopkins.

Well, put it THIS way: The day of the fight I was ther ein vegas and one of the guys involoved with the promotion asked me what I thought..and I told him that RJ would win -even though James is a GREAT fighter- because all the tings that make James great would never come into play gainst the style of Roy Jones. As for question 2... James wil be in the HOF anyway but I definitely think if he was the most disciplined guy out ther who paid serious attention to detail he would have had an even more spectacular career.... He would only have the loss to Jones on his record.
