Fighters you wanted to make it, but failed

Was just watching ESPN over at a buddies house, and they had a fight card from 2000. The headline was Angel Vasquez V Max Gomez.

I first saw Vasquez against Miguel Arrozal in 1996, and thought... man - this guy is exciting. He can punch, is a touch vulnerable, and therefore is exciting to watch. He then fought & KO'd Darryl Pinckney with one punch. I was really hoping for big things from him, and was sure he'd get to a high level. He never made it, though.

Who did you like to watch & hope they'd make it, but didn't?

        NAB,

Wow, you picked the exact guy I would have !
Just what the hell did happen to him ?
Man, he had great, great punching power. He had awesome handspeed, & put those power shots togther in textbook fashion.

As he progressed, he seemed to become more reluctant in & out of the ring. I'm pretty sure he had some bad hand injuries, & that could have played a big part in his shutting down over time.

I was really looking forward to him facing Hamed, had he continued progressing. That would have been exciting.

I'm pretty sure Angel was all set to square off with Barrera in 2000, but it never materialized....that summed up Vazquez' s career- disappointing.

Cory Spinks. I guess he really didn`t fail, he was the welterwight champ and he is still only about 26 or 27, but Judah made him look like an idiot in his hometown. Anyone know what `s up with Spinks? I haven`t heard his name mentioned for a while.

I was a huge Lamar Parks fan and I thought he was on his way to becoming the man at middlweight.

He was scheduled to fight Gerald McClellan when both he and McClellan both came down with career ending tradgedies.

Obviously we all know what happended with the G-man but Lamar contracted the HIV and his career was instantly over.

                  Broke my heart!

As for Angel Vazquez...early on the kid showed promise but my memory tells me that he turned into a runner who was not interested in getting hit.

I don't remember him turning into a runner, but I do remember him becoming one of those guys who stood around, not working his hands.
