Would a Vitali win over Haye retire them both?

If Vitali does sign a contract to fight Haye and stops him would he then retire? surely Haye would retire once again too?

Would heavyweight boxing be a better place for the absence of these two fighters?

    Yes.

Doubt the fight happens though, Vitali just doesn't seem interested.

Retire or fight then retire, that is the question. Nobody wants to see either fighter fighting BS fights against the Charrs of the world.

Would the heavyweight division be better off without either of them?

Would it open up more opportunities for other fighters?

There would be "more oppertunities" for lesser fighters, i guess.

            This fight WILL happen.

And in answer to your question, yes, it will retire them both.

It will give the young fighters time to mature instead of being thrown in the deep end too early. Fighters like Fury and Price are being pushed up the rankings way too quickly, Chisora should have never got a title fight so early.

If Vitali wins, both of them will retire, it's a great win to retire and especially if he does it in style unlike his cowardly brother.

However if Haye wins, then we'll get a Wlad vs Haye rematch

Haye would probably retire, but since he's still young, he'd probably come back a few years later for more money.
