Definitely Alvarez. He's protected the right way (for now) but almost all "big" up and coming stars are protected now but Alvarez gets mad hate for it.

The only young top Mexican fighter that's on his A-game right now is Mares. Canelo and Chavez Jr. are really slacking.

Neither Canelo or Jr have done anything to take the lead. They are popular but they are far from the best of Mexico. All the guys that are retired or about to retire have fantastic wins early in their careers.

Mares has better wins than any of those guys and could potentially have a super fight against Nonito looming in the future

Was is not the same as did. Williams looked like he was on shaky legs against Ishida, he wasn't the same fighter he was before getting KO'd badly. Ortiz, was coming off a KO loss to Floyd and was coming off a long layoff due to Berto testing positive for PEDs, Kirkland was coming off shoulder surgery and was a big ? as to how he would perform, and also we all know has a weak chin. Those matchups look great on paper but if you consider when he was willing to fight all of them it looks like he was waiting to see them fail before he is willing to step up. Also he's had the belt for how long and just now wants to step up?

The stables are healthy right now and there are great fighter who are still in their prime and putting on great fights, I think people value the undefeated fighters too much. I would say that fighters like mijares, Demarco, vasquez are all exciting fighters that pull a lot of real fans in, and the fact that they are not necesarily "backed by major Networks" makes them more accesible. The big names like Alvarez and Chavez are naturaly going to be at the forefront of interest and they deserve it, I am yet to see a boring fight from either guy.

Different era of boxing, you have to take into account the position of major promotions and Media today. Saul may be a Marketable young guy but back then some of those kats had the power to choose to fight many times per year, now every time a major name fights the promotional CO needs 6 months to arrange all the publicity. Its way complex but the basics are that today media is massive and it takes a lot more to pull the public into supporting an event, even if it is a good exciting sport. back in the day it was just assumed that if you put it on PPV people would buy it because there was a dependable boxing fan base.
I remeber chavez taking on rediculously easy tune up fights durring his run and everyone was ok with that, don kind didnt mind and no one would get to see those fights.
Look it up, its a very interesting trajectory the sport has taken now.

Do Mexican-American boxers count as Mexicans? Cuz there's Abner Mares, Robert Guerrero, Victor Ortiz, Brandon Rios, and others. If Canelo is the one to lead Mexico then Mexican Boxing is in trouble.
