Comments Thread For: Donaire's HBO Rating More Than Doubled Khan's Return

HBO’s boxing broadcast beat Showtime’s telecast Saturday night by a significant margin.

According to ratings released this week by Nielsen Media Research, HBO’s audience more than doubled Showtime’s audience. The HBO “World Championship Boxing” broadcast highlighted by Nonito Donaire’s three-round demolition of Mexico’s Jorge Arce drew slightly more than 1.3 million viewers, while the “Showtime Championship Boxing” telecast that featured Amir Khan’s 10th-round stoppage of Carlos Molina drew roughly 616,000 viewers.

Well HBO does have way more subscribers than Showtime, but double is still very impressive considering donaire's last fight did like 900K or something

It's likely that a good portion of HBO's strong numbers had to do with the Pacquiao-Marquez replay, as I'm sure a lot that missed it (or wanted to watch it again) were eager to see the KO of the year.

Good for Donaire though, the more eyeballs he can get in front of the better, especially while winning by spectacular KO himself.

          Apples and oranges.

HBO non-ppv ratings are almost always in the 1 to 1.5 million bracket. Showtime's are generally in a range close to 50% of that, sometimes a little higher. Khan's HBO fights were typically hitting the 1.3 million mark.

It's good for Donaire though. His fights with Mathebula and Narvaez were around the 1 million mark so this is a number HBO would be satisfied with.

A lot of cable companies offer HBO with their basic package, you have to upgrade to a better package if you want showtime.

                  Showtime commentators are the best

HBO boxing has to be watched on mute.
