Why is Berto such a big name?

His biggest win is Quintana, the only times he fought a legit challenge in Guerrero and Ortiz he lost and got hurt badly
The only reason of his fame is because HBO kept featuring his mismatches. smh

al haymon helped berto's career tremendously. he's allowed him to enjoy a billing that seems to be beyond his level of popularity.

that said, berto has been in some terrific fights. collazo was a great fight. ortiz was the fight of the year. guerrero will be a candidate for foty, and probably come in third behind alvarado- rios, and pacquiao - marquez 4

Berto is a fast handed, explosive action fighter.

He obviously doesnt have the skillset to beat the big dogs, but he sure as hell possesses some physical tools that allow him to be competitive and extremely exciting. Also with his explosiveness and speed, he has the potential to beat anyone with one punch, if he lands just right. Though he hasn't had a one punch KO in quite awhile, the way he delivers his punches, you can see it happening.

his power was always overrated. he didn't turn his knuckles over, lending itself to slapping a bit. he's probably an example of a puncher not reaching his potential because of lacking technique.

at his peak he was unbelievably fast, though. his handspeed was insane. his feet were never lightning fast.

Totally agree, his fights are suspenseful because he has the explosive speed and power to turn a fight not going his way around with one power shot. That said TS is right he really has no notable wins other than Quintana and Zaveck at all but has been show cased often on HBO so the exposure he has gotten explains his notoriety.

It's not the power as it is the speed and angles he punches at. Lets be honest, Guerrero should of been knocked out about 4 different times Some of those uppercuts were Tysoneesque.

He never used the shoulder block... he just stood in that stance.

That's actually the ONE HUGE mistake all these fighters do when trying to emulate the philly shell D... They do EVERYTHING, EXCEPT... tuck their CHIN, behind their SHOULDER.

Al Haymon did a good job of getting HBO to negotiate against itself when bidding for Berto's fights. From a aesthetic stand point Berto was a young, good looking, American kid with speed and pop. However it never translated into fans. He was a blue chip prospect but he simply stopped getting better. Then throw in the cancellation of the Mosely fight, then Berto gets injured, then the PED test, inactivity and now he loses. He's the classic shoulda' coulda' woulda' fighter. That said he can still get some wins under his belt if he makes some changes in his corner and is matched properly. He F'd up by dumping DiBella. GBP totally used him to prep Guerrero for super stardom.
