People who have been watching him for a minute know about his chin. He doesn't take the best shot. At bum level. But it's the conventional (unnatural for him) fighting style he's been forced to adopt since his team realized he couldn't get away with acting like he's a prime Roy Jones about ten or twelve fights ago that is going to be just as much or more of a liability.

Gamboa has been a confused fighter for some time. To this day he only looks comfortable when he's able to drop his hands and do that machine gun stuff, despite all the efforts to "correct his style" in the gym. I can see that he's been learning and improving but the curve is too slow. Fortunately for him he's a lethal weapon when he lets off.

Soon there will be an upset. Maybe not tomorrow. Soon though.

Nah man, Gamboa has actually improved over his time as a professional. When he first showed up on the scene, he had a lot of hype behind him and he got careless a few times.....he was never really hurt by any knockdown, he always got back up to win the fights.

He has become more defensively minded over the past year or two and I saw more than a few people comment on how they didn't like that style. The guy smashed people that gave JuanMa the hardest fights or even beat him (twice). I mean the guy ran through these people like they weren't even there and some people were saying that JuanMa would beat him......no way man, no way.

Gamboa's speed, power, reflexes are all off the chart. He is patient and dedicated too.....I mean the guy took off in a boat for the states and left his entire family back in Cuba.....that takes sincere dedication.

I saw some footage of Farenas, he is pretty solid but once he eats the first solid punch from Yuri, he is going to start to back peddle. I say Gamboa sparks this guy out in under 8 rds. Two rounds to shake off the rust and then he goes to work by breaking this guy down.
Did Gamboa even lose a round vs Salido or Ponce? I have terrible memory when it comes to fights. And like I posted before, has Gamboa even lost a round where hes been KDed? The dude gets right back up and shuts his opponent down from there on out.

He got dropped once and was deducted a point against Salido but he dropped him twice himself in the 12th round.

He won every round against Ponce until the stoppage.

Probably the only round he might've lost. I thought he dropped Salido in the same round he got KDed in. I guess not.

I through in that fight that salido won't beat the count in the 12 but he start to act like the soft punch that Gamboa give him wile he was down affected him soo he was granted 5 min but he definitely won't beat the count and Gamboa was on search and destroy mode..

Fact Gamboa has never been hurt, Fact when he gets dropped because of he's recklessness hes been off balance and gets up and ****s the guy, Fact he took some of Salido's best right hands which made Juanma Lopez turn into jello, for this and other stuff I like him better when he's being reckless, he is more exciting than when hes being defensively conscious just because he can pull it off he should, just like Roy Jones did until hes reflexes left him at which point he probably would get KTFO too . I want to see reckless Gamboa tonight Blow away Farenas ! hehe Only 11am tho wtf

Watched that video on Youtube last night, bro, "Yuriorkis Gamboa, su estilo". Freaking excellent! Thanks for suggesting it! The video is a great breakdown of Gamboa's strengths and perceived weaknesses. The narrator makes some insightful and, in my opinion, accurate comments. He backs his words with facts and video evidence. The man knows what the hell he's talking about. He sounds like a boxing professor soberly giving a dissertation on key aspects of Yuri's game. The video is entertaining, too, and even functions as a highlight reel. Too bad it's not in English, so more Boxingscene members could appreciate it.

Here it is, for all those interested:

Great post, Math! I enjoyed reading that.

I was reminded of how exciting a fighter Gamboa really is while watching that video I just posted. I don't think I want to see Yuri change his style very much at all. His attitude in the ring says, "I'm so much better, faster, stronger than you that I'll just do whatever the fuck I want." Then he delivers! It's truly a rare quality. It's what makes Gamboa one of the most electrifying fighters in the game today. Why would anyone want to change that?
