Someone tell me about Trout

I haven't followed boxing very well in the last 6 months. I must have missed something because I have no idea who this guy Trout is. I know he was commentating when Garcia merked Morales, but I kept thinking, "Who is this guy and what makes him an expert on boxing?" Then I remembered that Showtime had Paulie commentating too, so obviously they'll take anything they can get. Might as well have Carrot Top calling the fights in my mind.

But I digress. Who is he? Where did he come from? Who has he beat that's any good other than Cotto last night?

You'd think he would have been mentioned as an up-and-comer at some point, but I never saw his name anywhere until that Garcia-Morales card a few months back.

Yeah, I could look this stuff up, but I trust you guys.

He's an Army brat from New Mexico. Had a stellar amatuer career. Over 200 fights, national champion and a replacement fighter for the 2004 Olympics.

When he turned pro, the business of boxing wasn't too kind to him. He couldn't land any big fights in the United States. None of the television networks had any interest in showing him. Because of that, he had to travel outside of the country to land fights.

He went on the road to Panama and Canada to fight hometown fighters. Then finally got the opportunity to fight for the WBA title in Mexico against Canelo's brother. He would go on to defeat Canelo's brother and become world champion.

He defended his title I think 3 times before ultimately getting a call from the Cotto camp for Saturday's fight. Sure enough, he seized the moment and defeated Cotto.

I heard his name and knew about him for a couple years, but don't recall even one of his fights. I never seen him fight. I always seen the pic of him in the list of boxers in his weight devision before a fight. Weird.

His path sounds something like Winky Wright's. In that case, I'm sorry for not knowing about him sooner but glad he capitalized on his big chance and wish him well.
