WHAT ARE THEY MISSING Vol 1: Danny Garcia

Yesterday I made a thread asking if anyone thought Danny Garcia had what it takes to EVENTUALLY become elite (even though most of u simply read the thread title rather than the actually thread and thought I was asking if he was elite right now...)

Most people pretty much conceded that he (long story short) did indeed have the potential to one day be an elite fight... Most likely after the terrible Pacquiao/Mayweather era finally dies (hopefully soon)

That gave me the idea to start a series of threads asking what the next generation of fighters are missing in order to wind up next to fighters like Pacquiao and Mayweather in that special ELITE level

And, as the thread title suggests (I made this one obvious so nobody would make the same mistake again) today's episode is on Danny Garcia...

What should, and CAN be added to his game to pop what is currently a B+ to A- level fighter into the ELITE level

    Oscar De La Hoya..

In all seriousness like most people said he has the tools to eventually get up to that elite status and he's still young he has time to learn and adapt. His speed isn't the best, maybe a little more head movement too as he's open for counters.

I will say exactly what I said in that other thread.

He needs to work on his straight punches both his jab and his straight right, because he needs those to be better to keep people from just taking away his hook which is a great punch. A left hook is my favorite punch from an orthodox fighter when it is thrown well, but it is also one of the easiest punch to take away so to have a jab and straight right to set up the hook is crucial. If he can develop those punches a bit more he will be a pretty complete offensive fighter which will add a lot to what is already his strength.

He could stand to tighten up his defense a bit also he will never be a real defensive wiz, he just needs to do some subtle things to take a few less punches and to avoid getting hit clean.

I agree also. Right now he's pretty savvy in the ring but his footwork and defense could use some work. I think Pedro will fill those voids.

Only seen him a few times and he seems to get hit pretty easily so reckon he needs to tighten up on the defence side of things.

                Defense, jab, straight right.

Quite a few things he needs to straighten up, actually.

Stand by. Summer of 2013 hopefully. When Matthysse tears his body up and clocks him with one to the chin.

Garcia's game is based on punching WITH his opponent and getting the better of those exchanges. Most counter punchers work on avoiding a shot then landing theirs. Garcia is looking for patterns and timing his opponent and nailing them in the exchanges. He is excellent at this and could well be the best exponent of this out there. But it is a bit of a one trick pony act.
He is also a very competent body puncher and has a lot of leverage in those punches.
In offense he looks really immature when chasing an opponent and attacking. This is because he does not throw straight punches. He needs to straighten up his punches ,get better head movement and learn to track and hunt his man down because the way to beat him is to make him come to you and not go after him and someone is going to work this out.
His defense could do with some tidying up.
He has a very good mental attitude,is brave and happy to get in the mix, thinks very well under pressure and does not get flustered. He has a lot of things going for him and has big areas that can be improved on which I an not sure Angel is capable of helping him. He could do with some technical training from another coach with that coach working with and around Angel. The Angel Danny team works and you should never break up a winning team but Danny needs to get more diversity to add to what he already does well.
