  • Why do boxers Square up so much these days?

When I watch fights from older era, they basicly had there lead shoulder visible to other opponents and there boxing stance allowed them pivot and move lateral better and also gave there reach longer.

Example: Ricardo Lopez, alexis argulleo, hearns, pernell witaker, leonard, mayweathers

These days I see more boxers squaring up and throwing less tight and accurate punches. That and there stomach is visible to the opponent

Im not gonna give examples since I understand that you cant compare stiffs like amir khan, cotto, berto, broner and modern boxers to old school legends

Is there a reason for this?

Did you really compare ATG's with Broner, Khan and Berto?

I'd wager it's because the amateur systems have gotten rid of a lot of the punchers, so it's much safer to square up now.

When one hard punch is worth less than three shoe-shine punches, why the hell won't you throw the three shoe-shiners? That's the problem with the amateurs, it isn't setting them up for pro boxing anymore.

Squaring up is popular among uneducated brawlers

I hate to say yes but guess what? These guys are carrying the name of modern boxing right now!

So yes I did compared them to all time greats, but those all time greats I named fought in the same generation as modern boxers I named who dominating.

Which confuses me as to why modern boxing techniques have gone to crap!

Im saying this, seeing how the horrid consequences of up has caused ricky hatton!

Unfortunately, there's more than just brawlers squaring up. It's the first thing that catches my eyes most of the time when I watch these guys fight nowadays.

Was taking to my coach about this and he was showing me that it has it's advantages in terms of speed when delivering tight combos. I can't do it though. I like the long, Tommy Hearns stance.
