  • Comments Thread For: Schaefer: Donaire Should Be Next, Abner Mares is Better

Both Abner Mares and Nonito Donaire have beaten top rated fighters in their last fights which would only naturally lead to a showdown between the two best Super Bantamweight champions. While everyone is asking for this fight to be made, it will come down to each fighter’s promoters. Both have been involved in an ongoing feud which has prevented them from working together.

It's hard to get excited for this knowing the history between TR and GB.

They couldn't even agree on Bradley vs Guerrero. How would they possibly agree on a deal between two of their top guys?

There is something to be said for letting a fight marinate, but this fight has already been marinating a bit and Donaire is no spring chicken anymore, and small guys tend to age quicker.

This is pretty much the optimum time to make Donaire-Mares, the fight is a big money fight especially for those classes but it will never bust the bank and the only way for either guy to really move to a different level is if they fight each other.

It will be interesting to see how Arum sees it and if he is willing to take that risk or if he is content to let Donaire just do his thing. Arum really could go either way, despite Donaire being very talented it is not like he is some long term proposition or even that important to Top Rank's bottom line but on the other hand Donaire is doing just fine for Arum and he certainly doesn't want to help mint a young GBP fighter into a star.

most probably we will get RIGO , not MARES , OR NONITO might just move up after ARCE

Good to know GBP wants it but I don't think Arum will let it happen.

It's all talk on both sides. Just trying to get the public excited about these two to get them watch their fights just for Mares and Donaire not to fight at the end. Something along the same lines of Mayweather and Pacquiao.

I could care less what Abner Mares does or what Golden Boy says about him. I can't remember a fighter being so blantantly dirty. with refs on the GBP payroll why not be dirty?

the only reason I'd pay to see him fight Nonito is to watch Donaire KO his fake ass

Schaefer has no idea what he's talking about. If I was Arum I would be on the phone trying to make this fight happen immediately.

Mares fought Donaire's leftovers in Darchinyan and struggled in that fight. Donaire took away Vic's undefeated record and KOed him, Mares went to a split decision filled with several low blows.

He beat Agbeko in the 2nd fight, but should have been DQ'd in the first fight.

He did beat Moreno I'll give him that but overall their records are about similar so I don't know what Richard is talking but he's a promoter so let him talk.

Rigo is better than both, and he crushed Mares in the amateurs already.

i dont think Arum or Schaefer ...or that charlatan Oscar are serious about making this fight.

they will probably "attempt" some sort of negotiations, but itll be blowin smoke up peoples asses
