it's a silly name perpetuated by the fight night series.

it's called tucking your chin behind your lead shoulder and rolling right hands from orthodox fighters. it's been done forever.

It's a technique that Mayweather innovated a decade or so ago.Any examples of this technique being employed by other fighters well before Mayweather was even born are the work of a conspiracy to discredit Mayweather and his revolutionizing of the sport of boxing.

The lengths some will go in discrediting the great man.

Locche used the crab-shell defense more than the Philly, the same type old Foreman used. Floyd uses the shoulder roll defense, which for some reason got called the philly shell D.

To be fair, I've never heard it called the philly shell before Toney/Floyd during a fight.

Philly Shell or Crab...it don't matter what it is called...it is an effective style if done correctly...but it takes A LOT to pull it off, it takes time, good reflexes and athleticism...this is why not many use it and when they do use it it looks horrible and they get tagged with all type of punches because the Philly Shell has openings to it but someone like Mayweather is blessed with outstanding vision and reaction and reflexes, it is like he knows what punches is coming before you throw it...same for James Toney...great Reflexes so they can pull it off like NO OTHER FIGHTERS in recent Decades/Eras of boxing

But I always say "MAYWEATHER DID NOT INVENT THE PHILLY SHELL"...sure he mastered it but he did not invent it...this is nothing "NEW"

Say what you want about Roger and Floyd Sr....one thing they do know is boxing, they clearly one of the few trainers that truly studied and appreciate the legends from the past and they past that knowledge on to their Nephew/Son and a very early age...that is why Roger Mayweather always say "MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW **** ABOUT BOXING" and he is 100% Correct, especially today's CURRENT BOXING FANS! Roger clearly did his homework on the history of boxing while others are going by "WHAT THEY HEARD ABOUT THE LEGENDS"

I'm glad somebody sees it. And I hope you're sitting down, for what I'm about to tell you will blow your mind. You know who is the one behind this conspiracy? Why no other than your beloved congressman of the PI's promoter. Bob Arum!
